Match Report: Newcastle F.C. 0 v 2 Ballynahinch United

Shimna College, Newcastle was the setting for this league encounter between these two County Down NAFL Division 1B rivals. As the season end approaches each of the two teams had different agendas, the home team needing a win to secure vital points in their quest for promotion whilst the visitors needed the security of at least one point to avoid being dragged into the relegation dog fight. The Seasiders will not have underestimated their opponents however as they had only lost once in their previous twelve games and have one of the best defensive records in the division. Both teams fielded without key players with Newcastle missing Phillip Bonny to injury while United were without Dalton Tate for a similar reason.

The visitors had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half and they enjoyed considerable periods of pressure whilst defensively their back four of Miller, Majury, Hayes and Brashaw coped well with the home attack in which Matt Smyth and Conor Gribben were prominent.

United main attacking threat was through Stuart Hunter whose mazy runs caused lots of problems and his link up play with Matthew Shaw and Aaron Cheevers was a constant problem for the Newcastle backline of Holland, Allister, McCarthy and Fitzsimons.

In the 34th minute Hunter weaved his way through the Newcastle penalty area and was upended by McCarthy and the referee awarded a spot kick which was despatched by Alex Millar despite the efforts of Wayne Lennon in the Seasiders goal.

As half time approached a long ball out of the United midfield was latched onto by Gavin Crawford, who had been the victim of some rather harsh treatment prior to the taking of the penalty, and his headed pass fell into the path of Matthew Shaw who shot past the advancing Lennon to make it 2-0. It is possible that Shaw was in an offside position but the move was so swift that the referee could not have been close enough to get a clear view either way.

The United midfield of Carberry, Wilson, Crawford and Hunter were dominant in the closing minutes of the half with Shaw and Cheever’s movement causing all kinds of problems and it took several quality saves from Lennon to keep them out.

As expected Newcastle came out in the second half with great purpose and with the wind in their backs their intentions were clear as Travers, Moone, Collins and Gribben chased every ball in an effort to get decent service to their forwards however the United defence was resolute.

The more Newcastle pressed the more vulnerable they were at the back giving the visitors occasional openings and how the referee didn’t give a penalty when Hunter was tripped in the 50th minute will remain a mystery.

Bryan McMullan in the United goals had very little to do in the first half but in the second half he made several excellent saves and dominated his penalty area as corner after corner or free kick was launched from every conceivable angle however aided and abetted by Hayes, Majury, Miller and Brashaw allied to a willing midfield they stood strong.

The introduction of Newcastle substitutes Tim Sexton and Ciaran Brannigan gained them more and more possession and it was Brannigan who almost scored in the 80th minute when he stole in on the right wing and was unlucky to see his shot cannon of the far post for a goal kick.

United manager Keith Hamilton introduced David Kelly to the midfield and cousins Gareth and Ian McMullan to the forward line and all three could have scored with Kelly heading onto the crossbar and both Gareth and Ian missing decent chances when put clear on goal.

This was an excellent game with both teams playing their part however United were worthy winners and a team resolute to ensure that they would not throw away the 2-0 they had worked so hard to gain in a replica of what happened at Millbridge in August in the reverse fixture.

Match Report: Ballynahinch United 1 v 1 Bloomfield

United got back to Millbridge on Saturday past after several postponements for a league fixture against Bloomfield. The visitors although one point above United have played seven more games and a win for them was vital whilst the home side needed to ensure that they got something out of the game to avoid getting drawn into the relegation dog fight.

The home side fielded without four absentees from the previous week namely, Ian McMullan and Ross Hayes [suspended] David Kelly [family illness] and Stuart McMullan [wrist injury] and they were replaced in the match day squad by Greg Allison, Johnny Stevenson, Alex Miller and Dee Stewart.

It was the visitors who started the brightest whilst United were taking a little time to settle and Bloomfield capitalised on this to take the lead in the 5th minute.

United bounced back and launched a series of attacks on the Bloomfield rear-guard with Dee Stewart and Matty Shaw going close. United’s midfield of Aaron Cheevers, Ben Wilson, Stu art Hunter and Dylan Carberry worked tirelessly both in defence and attack creating a number of openings. Their efforts lead to United equaliser when Shaw was pulled back just outside the penalty area and Ethan Majury  fired in a dipping free kick which found its way into the net under the goal keepers body.

Defensively the much changed line-up of Gavin Crawford, Dalton Tate, Scott Brashaw and Ethan Majury settled well and except for one scare in the closing minutes when Brashaw had to head off the line they ensured that Brian McMullan in the United goal had a fairly easy day.

In the second half United had the best of the chances with Shaw and Hunter going close with long range shots and Crawford going agonisingly close from close range following a great left wing cross from Alex Miller. Johnny Stevenson and Greg Allison can on for the last quarter to change the United attack but the visitors fought feverously to ensure that they at least held on to a point which in the end was probably no more than either side deserved.

This week United travel to Dundonald for a league game against Donard Hospital another side that are in the relegation zone.

Match Report: Wellington Rec. 2 v 2 Ballynahinch United

United travelled to Millbrook, Larne for this league encounter with Wellington Rec who are one of the leading teams in the division this season. The pitch was in good condition and United were able to pick from a full squad. The opening few minutes were very much a case of both teams trying to size each other up however it was United who seemed to carry the biggest attacking threat and in the 10th minute they took the lead when Matty Shaw stabbed home from close in after a great cross from Aaron Cheevers. United continued to carry the biggest threat as they out passed a midfield and defence that struggled to close them down. The passing movements involving David Kelly, Dylan Carberry, Dalton Tate, Aaron Cheevers and Matty Shaw were excellent and they justifiably scored a second when Matty Shaw chipped the Wellington keeper from 25 yards. After this Wellington seemed to get a spurt of energy and for the last quarter of the first half they started to dominate proceedings forcing corner after corner. Try as they might they were we unable to stop the onslaught and minutes before half time they conceded a goal when a midfielder shot from the edge of the penalty giving Bryan McMullan no chance.

In the second half the United defence came under constant pressure with Dalton Tate, Ross Hayes, Scott Brashaw, Ben Wilson and Ethan Majury, who had gone to left back for the injured Stuart McMullan, having to work overtime to withstand their barrage of crosses. Not surprisingly Wellington equalised on the hour mark and although they did have a few other chances the defence held firm. It was not until the middle of the second half that United eventually got back into the game with their best chance falling to Stuart Hunter who had the ball taken off his head by a last gasp defensive clearance as he was about to head into an empty net.

The game ebbed and flowed over the remainder of the second half with Matty Shaw almost scoring again in the closing minutes when he almost connected with a cross from Dylan Carberry who was making his debut for the team. Ian McMullan and Gavin Crawford were introduced into the fray late on however United probably went away happy to have secured a valuable away point.

This weekend they entertain Bloomfield in a league fixture at Millbridge.

Match Report: Portaferry 1 v 3 Ballynahinch United (21/03/15)

This was United’s last match of the season and many would have said that their chances of getting anything out of this game would be pretty slim with Portaferry pushing for promotion with plenty of games to play, and having won 2 – 0 vs United the previous week.

The task was made all the more difficult given the absence of a number of experienced players and the management team having to draft a few untried second teamers and themselves.

Havng travelled across on the ferry, like a proper away day, things started well for the visitors. An early battling performance was strenghtened when Ian McMullan intercepted near the half way line and shrugged off a Portaferry midfielder before fizzing a fierce effort from far out beyond the flailing ‘ferry keeper and finding the corner after 20 minutes to put United 1 up.

The home team laid siege to the United goal but the defence of Boal, Majury, Brashaw and Wilson gave the outstanding Bryan McMullan great cover. The home team’s pressure paid off when they equalised before half time.

After the break, United’s midfield of Stuart McMullan, Dalton Tate, Aaron Cheevers and Gregg Allison continued to worked tirelessly, with Ian McMullan and teenager Scott Cheevers up front running endlessly and causing the Portaferry defence all sorts of problems.

Midway through the second half Ian McMullan banged in his second. A through ball from Aaron Cheevers found the forward through on goal, his left footed finish slotted past the keeper to give United the lead again.

Gregg Allison with pace to burn left his full back for dead and floated a cross from the right. Once again McMullan was on the end of it and rose like Shearer to head home the perfect hat-trick, United’s third and ensure the 3 points for United.

The goal also snatched the Top Goalscorer award away from the absent David Kelly.

Portaferry laid siege to the visitor’s goal once again, but left numbers short at the back allowing United to break.

The Gaffer, Murph, brought himself and coach Keith Hamilton on near the end of the game, to push the average age experience up significantly.

Murph found space on the right and with a swish of his wand of a left foot, he whipped a wonderful ball into the box, Ian lost his marker but the ‘keeper finally was able to stop McMullan from adding another.

An excellent performance all round with McMullan taking home the match ball… figuratively.

The small band of loyal United supporters ended their season’s travels with a great win, and the club finished in a respectable 6th place in NAFL Division 1B.

Match Report: Ballynahinch United 0 v 2 Portaferry

United entered this, their penultimate home game on the back of a good home win but missing a number of regular first teamers however the way they played from start to finish was a credit to them and their management team.

Right from the kick off it was the home team with the wind in their backs who were on the offensive with a long range shot from Gareth McMullan having the Portaferry goalkeeper Stephen Keith scrambling across his goal mouth as the ball passed his left hand post.

On twenty minutes Aaron Cheevers had a great opportunity when he ran onto a Greg Allison cross however he didn’t get enough power into his shot and goalkeeper Keith pulled of an outstanding save to touch the ball around the post for a corner.

United were dominating midfield with Scot Brashaw pulling the strings supported by the hard working Cheevers, Allison and Patterson.

Johnny Stevenson led the forward line exhibiting great strength in holding up the ball however a pulled hamstring on the half hour mark led to him being replaced by Aaron McCaffrey.

In defence Ethan Majury, David Boal and Dalton Tate were defending what little attacking threat that Portaferry posed over the first half hour with relative ease however in the last fifteen minutes of the 1st half they came into it more. Brian McMullan in the United goal  had to make a few timely  interceptions to pick up through passes as the opposition’s pacey forwards started to find space.

In the 35th minute Portaferry took the lead when Brian McMullan’s superb save to beat out a stinging shot fell kindly to Aaron McCarthy who was able to side foot the ball home.

In the second half United found themselves both 1 – 0 down and facing a strong wind in atrocious conditions and yet it was the home side who dominated possession. Unfortunately they failed to find the necessary openings and on the hour mark Michael Doran doubled the visitors lead when he ran onto a through ball to strike a shot past McMullan into the net.

While Portaferry would have the occasional breakaways United passed the ball around with ease with teenagers Tate and Allison providing on both flanks however their best chance was a shot from Ian McMullan that sailed just over the crossbar.

This weekend  United travel to Newtownards to take on one of the league favourites 1st Bangor.
