Pre-Season Friendly Match Report: Ballynahinch United 3 – 0 Moneyslane

Ballynahinch United got their preseason underway with a friendly against Mid-Ulster side Moneyslane at Millbridge last Saturday. Manager Keith Hamilton was missing a number of first team squad members, however it gave him the chance to give some of the youth team an opportunity to show what they can do and when the chance came they most certainly did.

The home side were on top for most of the first half with David Kelly running the midfield aided and abetted by Alex Miller, Gavin Crawford, Jordan Kennedy and Stuart Hunter.

Moneyslane came more into the game in the latter stages of the first half and early part of the second and defensively Greg Allison, Ross Hayes, Ethan Majury and Scot Brashaw were in commanding form while goalkeeper Brian McMullan came to the rescue on several occasions. Aaron Cheevers played up front on his own and his hold up play and distribution was excellent throughout.

United took the lead in the 30th minute when a bit of quick thinking by Cheevers led to a free kick being taken quickly for Kelly to lash it home past the visiting keeper.

During the second half four youth team players – Craig Tate, Alex Burtney, Ben Ohnuo and Jack Davis were introduced into the team and as they have been training with the seniors since late June they didn’t look one bit out of place. It was during the latter stages of the game that United increased their lead with two goals from Cheevers and Kennedy. In the 75th minute Aaron Cheevers latched onto a through ball and fired an unstoppable shot into the net while in the 85th minute Jordan Kennedy stepped up to score from the penalty spot.

This was a great start to the season however a lot of hard work has still to be done in preparation for the seasons start on 13th August at home to Wellington Rec. in the Steel & Sons Cup.

Training sessions continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening at the Millbridge and new players will be made very welcome.

Next Saturday afternoon [23rd July] United will entertain Bloomfield at the Millbridge.

Club Notes

It is now two months since United had a first team game with scheduled fixtures both home and away being cancelled due to the weather conditions. Last Saturday’s Clarence Cup tie to Abbey Villa fell victim to the weather and it has been rescheduled for this saturday with a 1.30pm kick off. Mind you the weather forecast for the coming week isn’t exactly too good so fingers crossed.

The Swifts have had a couple of games (away defeats to Dromora & Tollymore) since the turn of the year with a home game scheduled for this saturday at The Millbridge against Carryduff.

However for the majority of players over this past few months it has been a case of train and train and train in the rain in the hope of a game.

Club Notes

Ballynahinch United completed their programme of preseason friendly matches when they entertained a Crusaders Select team at the Millbridge. United took the lead midway through the half when Stuart Hunter pounced on a loose ball to drill home. The home side had numerous opportunities with Matty Shaw, Gareth McMullan and Ethan Majury going close with headers.

In the second half both managers made wholesale changes and the visitors equalised. The game was well attended and the club had a barbecue going throughout the afternoon as a fund raiser. Many thanks to all those who assisted in anyway on the day.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the preseason friendly games has been the introduction of a number of the under 17 squad and what a breath of fresh air they have proved to be. The hard work that Ballynahinch Youth has put in over the years looks like there will be a steady stream of young players challenging for places in the adult teams.
Everyone at Ballynahinch Youth is to be congratulated on the excellent work that they are undertaking.

This Saturday, United commence their 2015/16 league programme with a local derby against Ballynahinch Olympic at home. The kick off is at 2pm and as a large crowd is expected supporters of both teams are encouraged to come early to avoid congestion on the road. There is adequate car parking at Millbridge. Admission will be £3 for adults and children under 16 are free.

The committee of BUFC would like to express their thanks to BEC Electrical for proving a new team strip once again. Also our thanks to CEF – City Electrical Factors for providing match sponsorship for last Saturdays match.

Anyone wishing to sponsor a match during the season should contact a committee member. We are very grateful to those individuals and businesses who have provided support so far this season it is really appreciated.
