Ballynahinch United in blue hosted St Luke’s in yellow on a windy day at The Millbridge where both nearly blew away.
United played against the wind in the first half and dominated the game. Ian McMullan and Ross Murray came close but it was St Luke’s who opened the scoring when a long ball was misjudged by Stuart McMullan who conceded a corner.
The resulting corner was never cleared by the home defence and rattled around until it was finally prodded home.
United continued to threaten but the half finished 1 – 0 to the visitors, who now had to contend with the wind in their faces.
Ballynahinch had the majority of possession and Gavin Crawford and Scott Brashaw had two efforts excellently saved by the St Luke’s ‘keeper in either corner of the goal. Ross Murray had another opportunity which he could only direct over the bar following a low driven cross from the left.
A feisty final flourish finished the game when an away team centre half appeared to throw a punch at a United striker but with the referee looking after proceedings at the other end of the pitch, no punishment was given.
The game finished 1 – 0 to the visitors. Defeated and disappointed, United look forward to making amends next week.
