Saturday 29 January
United returned to The Millbridge for the first time since 4 December but found themselves behind almost immediately.
Things quickly got worse for Ballynahinch, missing 6 from the week before, including Ian McMullan with a suspected MCL tear, when the visitors doubled their lead moments later.
Shellshocked, United fought back and made it 2 – 1 when Matthew Shaw slotted home a penalty after being upended.
The one-goal deficit didn’t last long however as Newtownabbey scored again to make it 3 – 1 with less than 15 on the clock. A value-for-money game for the fans.
Newtownabbey scored again not long before the break.
After half-time, Unied significantly improved and played much better. The away side struggled to cope with the increased quality and intensity but despite United’s possession they failed to take maximum advantage.
Jordan Patterson, Matthew Shaw and returning debutant Jack Patterson all came close but to no avail until Jack scored from close-range after wing-wizardry from Ross Murray.
It was too little too late and United didn’t have enough time to pursue a comeback despite a much improved second-half.
